========================================
Live Preflight — a panel for Illustrator
========================================

■ What is this?

A panel that looks through your Illustrator document and lists the
things to fix before you send it to print. Leave it open and it
checks again as you work.

It checks the print requirements that can be judged mechanically from
the document data: image resolution, stroke width, total ink, and so on
(defaults: 300 dpi, 0.3 pt, 300 %). You can change these in Settings.

The panel shows English or Japanese. By default it follows the language
of Illustrator. You can also choose the language in Settings.

■ Requirements

・macOS
・Illustrator 2020 or later (tested with Illustrator 2026)
・Made for CMYK print documents. RGB documents also open, but four
checks (CMYK decimals, total ink, rich black, RGB objects) show
  "–" (cannot be judged).

■ What is in the folder

・Read Me First.txt … this file
・はじめにお読みください.txt … the same instructions in Japanese
・入稿チェック.zxp … the panel itself. Install this file
                                 (入稿チェック is the Japanese name
                                 of the panel)
・うまくいかないとき用/ … "if something goes wrong". You will
                                 not normally need it (see
                                 "Troubleshooting" below)

The file and folder names are in Japanese. The panel is the same for
both languages.

----------------------------------------
 Install
----------------------------------------

Illustrator panels (extensions) come as ".zxp" files. The easiest way
to install one is a free app.

【Steps】

1. Quit Illustrator.

2. Install the free app "ZXP Installer".
Download the Mac version from this page:

       https://aescripts.com/learn/zxp-installer/

3. Open ZXP Installer and drag "入稿チェック.zxp" onto its window.

4. When it says "Successfully installed" (or similar), you are done.

5. Start Illustrator.

※ If you prefer not to use ZXP Installer, see "Installing without
the app" at the end of this file.

----------------------------------------
 Opening the panel
----------------------------------------

In Illustrator, choose

    Window → Extensions → 入稿チェック

※ The menu item uses the panel's Japanese name, 入稿チェック.
※ In some Illustrator versions the menu is called
  "Extensions (Legacy)".

----------------------------------------
 How to use it
----------------------------------------

Open the panel and it checks the document that is in front.

1. The top line shows "No issues" or "{n} to review".

2. Below that, results are listed by category.

     ✓ … no issues
     ✗ … needs review
? … contains something that cannot be judged automatically.
         Check it by eye
・ … information only (neither good nor bad)
     – … this check cannot be judged for this document

3. Click a category name to open or close it.
When it is closed, the right end still shows "✓" or a count.

4. Press "Select" to select the matching objects on the canvas.
You can fix them right away.

5. Switches in the top bar

・Auto-update … when on, the panel checks again as you edit
・Issues only … hides the ✓ items and shows only what to fix

Press "Re-check" to check manually at any time.

When Auto-update is off and the document changes, the verdict
changes to "Changed" and the list is dimmed. This is so an old
"No issues" is not read as the current result.

6. The checklist at the bottom is for things the data cannot tell.
Check them yourself and tick the boxes. The ticks are cleared when
   you switch documents.

----------------------------------------
 Settings
----------------------------------------

Press "Settings" to change the following.

・Language: Auto (follows Illustrator's language), English, or Japanese
・Minimum image resolution
default 300 dpi with the English UI, 350 dpi with the Japanese UI
・Minimum stroke width: default 0.3 pt
・Total ink limit: default 300 %
・Raster effect resolution: default 300 ppi

If your printer gives different requirements, set the values to match
them.

----------------------------------------
 Trial and license key
----------------------------------------

Right after you install it, the panel runs as a trial.

・You can use every feature for 14 days. Only the days you actually
use the check are counted: days you press "Re-check", and days the
panel checks again after you edit a document. Days you only
install it, or leave Illustrator open without touching it, are not
  counted.
・After 14 days, verdicts (✓ ✗ ?) and counts are still shown as
  before.
・Three things stop: the "Select" buttons, the names of the matching
  items, and Auto-update.

After you buy, press "Enter license key" at the top of the panel,
paste the key, and press "Activate".

・Bought on Gumroad … the key is in your purchase email and in your
Gumroad library. You need an internet
                       connection when you activate.

When the license is active, the top bar goes away and the bottom of the
panel shows "Licensed (Gumroad)".

----------------------------------------
 What it checks
----------------------------------------

【Color】
・Document color mode is CMYK
・CMYK values with decimals
・Colors over the total ink limit
・Black that is not K100 (rich black, four-color black)
・RGB objects (fill and stroke)
・White set to overprint
・List of spot colors ※ information only
・Where Registration color is used
(information only for crop-mark lines; needs review when used for
  fills or text)

【Images and resolution】
・RGB images (embedded and linked)
・Missing linked images
・Images below the minimum resolution
・Linked images that are not PSD / EPS / TIFF
・Linked images with full-width or Japanese characters in the file name
・Raster effect resolution

【Strokes and objects】
・Strokes thinner than the minimum width
・Text that is not outlined
・Number of fonts used is zero
・Stray points
・Objects with no fill and no stroke
・Empty text paths
・Objects outside every artboard
・Objects whose contents cannot be checked (if there is even one, it
  shows "?" for review)

【Layers and state】
・Locked / hidden / non-printing layers
・Locked objects
・Hidden objects

The contents of locked, hidden, and non-printing layers are not
checked at all. Unlock or show them before you check (the contents of
non-printing layers will not print).

----------------------------------------
 What cannot be judged automatically
----------------------------------------

● The contents of symbols, envelopes (warps), blends, graphs,
　gradient meshes, and patterns

Illustrator scripts cannot look inside them. Warped text that is
not outlined does not appear under "Text that is not outlined".

These are counted with "?" under "Objects whose contents cannot be
checked". Use "Select" to find them and check them by eye.

● Color mode and resolution of linked AI / EPS / PDF files, and the
　resolution of rotated placed images

The row shows "?" and lists the file name for checking by eye.
"Select" selects where it is placed.

● Fills, strokes, and effects added in the Appearance panel, and the
　contents of opacity masks

Scripts can only see the basic fill and stroke. A second stroke or
an RGB fill added through Appearance still shows ✓, so check the
　Appearance panel.

● Crop mark size, bleed width, printable area, whether linked images
are up to date, and commercial-use licenses for fonts and images

These cannot be judged from the data. Check your printer's
　specifications.

This panel is an aid for checking. It cannot guarantee that nothing is
missed. Make the final decision by eye and with proofs.

----------------------------------------
 Troubleshooting
----------------------------------------

● The panel does not appear under Window → Extensions

First quit Illustrator completely and start it again.
Illustrator must be restarted once after installing.

If it still does not appear, run "署名なし拡張を許可.command"
("allow unsigned extensions") in the "うまくいかないとき用" folder.

　　1. Right-click the file (or control-click)
　　2. Choose "Open" from the menu
※ Double-clicking shows "cannot verify the developer" and
　　     does not open it
　　3. When asked "Are you sure you want to open it?", press "Open"
　　4. When it finishes, restart Illustrator

The script's messages in Terminal are in Japanese.

This sets your Mac to load all unsigned extensions, not only this
panel. Once the panel appears, run
　"署名なし拡張の許可を元に戻す.command" ("undo allowing unsigned
extensions") from the same folder in the same way to turn the
setting back off. The panel keeps working.

● There is no "Extensions" menu at all

→ Your Illustrator may be too old (2020 or later is required).

● The panel asks you to open a document

→ No document is open in Illustrator.

● Some color checks show "–" (cannot be judged)

→ The document color mode is RGB. You can switch it with
File → Document Color Mode → CMYK Color.

● The panel shows "Check failed"

→ An error occurred during the check. Press "Re-check".
If it keeps happening, restart Illustrator.

● Illustrator becomes slow with heavy documents

→ Turn off "Auto-update" in the top bar.
Then press "Re-check" only when you need it.

----------------------------------------
 Uninstall
----------------------------------------

Choose "Uninstall" in ZXP Installer, or right-click
"アンインストール.command" ("uninstall") in the "うまくいかないとき用"
folder and choose "Open".

Restart Illustrator and the panel is gone.

----------------------------------------
 Disclaimer
----------------------------------------

This panel is an aid for checking. It cannot guarantee that it finds
every problem. Make the final decision by eye and with proofs.
The developer is not responsible for losses caused by the panel's
results (such as reprinting costs).

The default thresholds follow common print requirements. If your
printer's requirements are different, follow your printer's
specifications and adjust the values in Settings.
